Before buying a safe it is best to know what it is that you want from a safe.  Safes can run from a small budget to a few thousand dollars.  Most home owners choose economy fire safes for their household as they cover the basic needs that people want from a home safe.  Safes are thick and are smaller inside then would appear.  When buying a safe it is best to know the inside dimensions you require.

SAFE RATINGS

UL Fire Ratings

UL Class 350 1 hour

Safe must maintain an interior temperature less than 350 degrees F for a period of one hour when exposed to a exterior temperature of 1700 degrees F.

UL Class 250 2 hour

Safe must maintain an interior temperature less than 350 degrees F for a period of two hours when exposed to a exterior temperature of 1850 degrees F.

Burglary UL Ratings

Burglary safes are rated by their Underwriters Laboratories rating, known as UL rating.  B & C are the most common ratings.

RSC Residential Security Container Rated

Requirements

RSC rated safes offer a limited degree of protection and must be able to withstand 5 minutes against rigorous prying, drilling punching, chiseling and tampering attacked by UL technicians.

Typical or Required Features

  • UL Listed Group II combination lock or Type 1 electronic lock
  • Door material must be equivalent of 3/16” open hearth steel
  • Body walls material must be equivalent to at least 12 gauge open hearth steel

 B-Rated

B-Rated safes walls are less than ½” thick and the door is less than 1” inch thick.  The ratings of safes are used by the insurance industry to indicate the degree of protection that a safe will provide to you against a burglary attack.

C-Rated

C-Rated safes the steel doors must be a minimum of 1” thick and the steel body must be at least ½” thick.

Fire Resistant Safes

Fire rated safes are the most economical safes used to secure objects against theft and/or damage from fire.

Typical Features

  • I hour fire protection up to an internal temperature of 350 degrees
  • Removable door to make it easier to move
  • Pre-drilled hole to anchor safe
  • Plastic pull out tray or jewelers or small items
  • Combination or Electronic lock, most electronic come with key back up

Burglary Safes

Burglary safes offer one of the UL Burglary Ratings.  These safes do not have fire protection.

  • Removable door to make it easier to move
  • Pre-drilled hole to anchor safe
  • Plastic pull out tray or jewelers or small items
  • Combination or Electronic lock
  • Relocking device

Fire & Burglary Safes

Fire and Burglary safes offer both fire and burglary ratings and are the best all round safes.

  • One of the Burglary ratings above
  • 1-2 hours fire rating
  • Pre-drilled hole to anchor safe
  • Adjustable shelf or sheves
  • UL Listed Combination or Electronic lock
  • Relocking device
  • Wheels that can be removed

Depository Safes

Depository safes are used to protect cash, keys, and other valuables at point of purchase.  Employees may also use them to do cash deposits and offer additional loss prevention against theft.  They are available in a variety of sizes

Typical Features

  • Front or top loading
  • No fire rating
  • Pre-drilled hole to anchor safe
  • UL Listed Combination or Electronic lock

Wall Safes

Wall safes are designed to fit into your existing stud walls.  Pictures are typically put over wall safes to that they are concealed.

  • No fire rating
  • 4 inches in depth to fit in existing stud walls
  • Adjustable shelf or sheves
  • UL Listed Combination or Electronic lock
